Southeast Alaska Discovery Center Biomass Boiler
October 10, 2011
The high cost of heat has been central to years of discussion and planning for the new pilot biomass boiler system now coming to life at the spectacular Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in Ketchikan.
The center, which provides a wealth of information to more than a million visitors each year, has replaced two oil-fired boilers with one custom designed, highly efficient system to be fueled by local wood densifiedinto fuel pucks. The boiler system is expected to serve as a showcase location to be replicated in similar facilities throughout Alaska.

Chipping Away At Emissions

Tighter air regulations and and abundance of trees have paired up to fuel the move toward hybrid biomass boilers in these Canadian hospitals. Read about the upgraded systems’ differences and the considerations for trading fossil fuels for sawdust, wood chips, and bark.
Think of Canada, and there’s a good chance that what comes to mind is a sparsely populated country with spectacular scenery. Meandering coastlines, dramatic mountain ranges, and pristine lakes are located throughout the provinces, as well as vast expanses of forest, which carpet 402 million hectares — or almost half — of the country.

Seaman Paper Company
February 07, 2009
Seaman Paper Co. is a 61 year old privately held paper plant located in rural Massachusetts. Under the guidance of George Davenport Jones, III, loyal employees keep this historic facility operating 24/7, 365 days per year. Seaman Paper Co. produces lightweight specialty papers including decorative tissue wraps, crepe streamers, foodservice tissues, SatinWrap, and personalized printed papers. A Hurst Hybrid S600 wood fired boiler was just one of many elements of a comprehensive energy-saving initiative designed by Mr. Jones and implemented over a ten-year period. Changes in operations, equipment, and fuels have resulted in significant annual reductions in both oil usage (nearly 1.7 million gallons) and electricity (2.6 million kilowatt hours). The annual savings is noteworthy as well: up to $1.5 million per year in operating costs.
